Yoshiko Tsuchida

Description
Yoshiko Tsuchida was a Japanese manga artist and writer born in Tokyo on February 26, 1948. She began her career in the manga industry as an assistant to the influential gag manga creator Fujio Akatsuka, known for works such as Osomatsu-kun and Himitsu no Akko-chan. Her time at Fujio Pro began through a notable accident; she had intended to visit Studio Zero in the same building but entered the wrong floor, where she was recruited as an assistant. She departed from the studio in 1968 to work independently, making her professional debut as a creator that same year with the series Harenchi-kun.

Tsuchida is most renowned for her manga Tsuruhime-ja!, a nonsense gag series that parodied the traditional, gentle heroines common in shōjo manga of the era. The series was serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Margaret magazine from 1973 to 1979. Its central character is Princess Tsuru, a selfish, unkempt, and ill-tempered princess living in the Edo period, whose chaotic interactions with her retainers and friends formed the basis for its humor. The manga was recognized with the Excellence Award at the fourth Japan Cartoonists Association Awards. Its popularity led to a 49-episode television anime adaptation, which premiered on Nippon TV in 1990.

Her artistic identity was defined by a style of comedy that combined the visual language of shōjo manga with the frantic, absurdist humor she learned from Fujio Akatsuka. This approach led to her being described as a female Fujio Akatsuka and established her as a pioneering figure in gag manga aimed at a female audience. Beyond her most famous work, she created a wide range of other manga, including Nanohana Tsubomi, Watashi wa Sijimi!, Yoshiko de~su! Waratte Itadakimasu!!, Hideko-chan, Kimidori Midoro Aomidoro, Neba Neba Nebako, and Mattanashi!! Yoshiko wa Old Lady.

Yoshiko Tsuchida died on September 15, 2023, at the age of 75. Her career is noted for its significant contribution to comedic storytelling in shōjo manga, breaking from established conventions with a unique and influential voice.
