Kusame

Description
Kusame is an original manga creator known for the essay manga Fujoshi no Hinkaku. The creator is a Tokyo native who, by the time of the work’s adaptation in 2010, had been a self-identified fujoshi, or fan of boys-love content, for 15 years. Kusame is a pen name used for works outside the boys-love genre; for boys-love manga, the creator uses the separate pen name Reno Amagi.

The most notable work credited to Kusame is Fujoshi no Hinkaku, a single-volume essay manga published by Libre Publishing on January 10, 2008. The work is described as a bible for fujoshi, offering insight into the daily life and culture surrounding female fans of boys-love material. It features characters such as Fujoko, a novice fan, and her senior colleague Takayo, and includes practical content like a shopping map of Tokyo’s Otome Road district and recipes for themed bento boxed lunches.

Fujoshi no Hinkaku was adapted into a Flash anime that was released on DVD in Japan on February 26, 2010. The 31-minute adaptation was written and directed by Yūji Umoto and produced at Panda Factory studio, with Kei Shindō and Yuki Matsuoka in the lead voice roles.

In terms of artistic identity, Kusame’s work is closely tied to the fujoshi community, drawing directly from the creator’s personal experience within that subculture. The dual pen names serve to separate non-BL projects, such as Fujoshi no Hinkaku, from a larger body of boys-love manga created under the name Reno Amagi. This body of work includes numerous titles across genres such as comedy, romance, and school life, often with yaoi or boys-love themes. The creator is also a member of the dōjin circles glassero and Megane Rochika.

The creator’s significance in the industry lies in the documentary and representative nature of Fujoshi no Hinkaku. Both the manga and its anime adaptation serve as an early mainstream portrayal of fujoshi culture, presented from an insider’s perspective. The work functions as both a guide and a cultural record, contributing to the visibility of a dedicated fan demographic within the anime and manga publishing landscape.
