Pepe Carabias
Description
José Carabias Lorenzo, known professionally as Pepe Carabias, is a Spanish actor born in Madrid on April 23, 1947, with a prolific career spanning over six decades in film, television, theater, and voice acting. He began his professional journey in 1963 and is particularly renowned for his extensive work in dubbing, where his distinctively youthful voice has made him a recognisable figure in Spanish animation and anime. His career as a voice actor is closely linked with the distributor Arait Multimedia, for which he has provided voices for numerous series.
Carabias has lent his voice to a vast array of anime characters for the Spanish market. Among his most iconic roles is Benji Price from the soccer series Captain Tsubasa, known in Spain as Oliver y Benji, a character he has voiced since the early 1990s. He is also the long-standing Spanish voice of Usopp in One Piece, a role he performed for over 20 years. His other major anime credits include Genta Kojima, Shuichi Akai, and Detective Chiba in Detective Conan, J.P. in Digimon Frontier, Guilmon in Digimon Tamers, Jack Wallside in Inazuma Eleven, and Timmy in Winx Club and its spin-off World of Winx. He also voiced the character Komiya, the meerkat chief accountant who works under Ton, in the European Spanish dub of the Netflix series Aggretsuko.
Beyond anime, his voice work encompasses a wide range of animation, including roles such as the protagonist Moomin, Zozo in Guardians of the Galaxy, and for a time, the voice of Woody Woodpecker. He also provided the voice for the character Hugo in the popular Spanish television game show El juego de Hugo during the 1990s.
His contributions to the world of voice acting and television have been formally recognised. In 2018, he received the Premio Constantino Romero at the Festival de Televisión de Vitoria-Gasteiz (FesTVal), an award that honours television figures for whom voice has played a fundamental role. A unique achievement in his career was being the only Spanish actor to work directly with Jim Henson, providing the voice and puppetry for the character Pepe Soplillo, a Muppet created especially for him on the TVE program El kiosko.
