Description
Tomoko Nishimura is a Japanese manga artist and creator known for originating several works that have been adapted into anime. She made her professional debut as a manga author in 1992 with the work Doki Doki Sasete yo!, which was published in the winter issue of the magazine Ciao DX Deluxe. Hailing from Hyogo Prefecture, her early career involved serializing manga primarily in educational magazines published by Shogakukan before she began contributing regularly to the flagship shojo magazine Ciao from 1997 onward.
Nishimura is best recognized as the original creator of the manga Gokujō!! Mecha Mote Iinchō (known in English as The Super Excellent!! Extremely Popular Class President). The series began serialization in Ciao in 2006 and grew into a significant franchise. Its popularity led to a multimedia expansion, including the development of video games based on the property, and ultimately a television anime adaptation. The Gokujō!! Mecha Mote Iinchō anime premiered in April 2009 and ran for 51 episodes, followed by a second series titled Gokujō!! Mecha Mote Iinchō Second Collection, which aired from 2010 to 2011. She is credited as the original work’s author for both anime series.
In addition to her work on serialized manga, Nishimura is also associated with the original anime project Yan Yan Machiko. A short comedy series centered on a young sheep girl named Machiko, the animation was produced by the studio Kanaban Graphics. The first episode was released in December 2009. For this project, Nishimura is credited with the original concept and character conceptual design, and she also served as a co-director alongside Satoshi Tomioka.
Nishimura’s artistic identity is rooted in shojo manga, with her most prominent work, Gokujō!! Mecha Mote Iinchō, exemplifying the fashion-conscious and character-driven narratives typical of the genre. The series’ success marked a significant achievement in her career, establishing her as a creator capable of generating a long-running franchise that extended from print media to television and consumer products. Her involvement in Yan Yan Machiko also demonstrates a versatility that extends beyond traditional serialized manga into the creation of original animated shorts.
