He left Square Enix in October 2003 and founded his own freelance scenario company, Stellavista Ltd., through which he continues to collaborate on numerous projects.

Nojima is most widely recognized for his work as a scenario writer on several landmark video games. He was the primary writer behind the stories of Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy X-2, as well as the original Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II. In 2011, a short anime and audio drama titled Busō Chūgakusei Basket Army, based on a novel he wrote, was announced. His manga credits are largely as the original creator for adaptations of games he worked on, such as the Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories manga, where his story concepts were adapted into the graphic novel format.

Nojima’s artistic identity is defined by a strong focus on emotional storytelling and complex character relationships. He is known for creating intricate narratives and for his willingness to explore romantic themes, which was distinctive in the video game medium.
