Mayuko Kanba
Description
Mayuko Kanba is a Japanese manga artist known primarily for her work on comedic spin-offs and original series within the shonen genre. She was born on April 18 in Shimane Prefecture, the same region that would later be established as the fictional hometown of one of her most famous characters, Hanzawa-san. Her early career in manga saw her receive multiple accolades, including honorable mentions at the Gessan Newcomer Award in both October 2009 and January 2010 for her works related to "Policeman of Crimetown" and "Kazuko-chan and the Mysterious Door". She further gained recognition by placing third in the 2018 Coming Manga Award for her work "Nishikida Keibu wa Dorobō ga Osuki".
Kanba is the creator of several original manga properties, with her most internationally recognized work being Detective Conan: The Culprit Hanzawa, also known as Hannin no Hanzawa-san. This series is a gag comedy spin-off of Gosho Aoyama's long-running detective manga Detective Conan. The premise focuses on the iconic black-silhouetted "criminal" figure that traditionally represents unnamed suspects in the original series, reimagining him as a named character named Hanzawa who moves to the crime-ridden Beika district with the intent to commit murder. The manga began serialization in Shogakukan's Shonen Sunday S magazine on May 25, 2017, and as of October 2023, the chapters have been compiled into eight tankobon volumes.
The success of the manga led to an anime television series adaptation produced by TMS Entertainment, which aired from October to December 2022 before streaming internationally on Netflix. The anime was noted for featuring returning voice actors from the main Detective Conan series to reprise their roles, alongside new cast members for the spin-off's original characters. Prior to this major franchise work, Kanba authored other original manga including Bareteru yo! Jamboreene, Nishikida Keibu wa Dorobō ga Osuki, and Meikyūiri Tantei. The National Diet Library of Japan also cites an earlier work titled "Bareteru yo! Jamboreene" from 2011 as an entry in her bibliography.
Within her artistic identity, Kanba is known for including a self-caricature within the pages of The Culprit Hanzawa, often depicted wearing sunglasses or a mask that conceals her eyes. This character serves as a running gag within the spin-off, where her alter-ego is jokingly implied to be responsible for the death of original creator Gosho Aoyama in the corresponding volumes of the main Detective Conan series. Additionally, a fluffy dog character that appears in the series is reportedly based on a pet she owns in real life. Her body of work demonstrates a consistent engagement with parody and self-aware humor, utilizing established tropes and characters to create meta-narratives that appeal to fans of the original source material while standing alone as original comedic works.
