Uoto
Description
Uoto is a Japanese manga artist born in Tokyo on May 29, 1997. The creator's pseudonym is derived from a fondness for the daggertooth pike conger, a type of fish. The decision to pursue a career in manga was made during the first year of junior high school after watching the anime Bakuman. Later, Uoto enrolled in university to study philosophy but left after two years to focus entirely on creating manga. The professional debut occurred in 2017 when a one-shot titled Honorable Work received a newcomer award from Weekly Shōnen Magazine and was published. Early experience also included work as an assistant on The Kindaichi Case Files Gaiden: The Case Files of the Criminals.
The first serialized work was Hyakuemu, which ran in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket from November 2018 to August 2019. This sports manga, centered on the world of competitive 100-meter dash, was collected into five tankōbon volumes. The series represents the creator’s initial foray into long-form storytelling and established a foundation for future projects.
Following this, Uoto launched Orb: On the Movements of the Earth, which was serialized in Big Comic Spirits from 2020 to 2022. This historical drama, which explores the conflict between science and religious doctrine through the lens of heliocentric theory, brought significant critical acclaim. It received the Grand Prize at the 26th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize and the 54th Seiun Award in the comics category. In 2023, the creator began serializing Welcome to FACT, a work published simultaneously on the Manga One and Ura Sunday platforms. A collaborative project serving as the original concept and storyboard contributor for Dr. Muscle Beetle began serialization in 2025.
An anime film adaptation of Hyakuemu was announced in May 2024. The film is produced by the studio Rock n Roll Mountain and directed by Kenji Iwaisawa. It was released in Japan in September 2025.
The creator’s body of work often engages with themes of knowledge, intellectual courage, and philosophical inquiry, reflecting personal interests in philosophy and the history of science. Influential works cited as formative include Parasyte, Ping Pong, Ushijima the Loan Shark, Kaiji, Ajin, and Death Note. The artist has also cited filmmakers such as Quentin Tarantino as influences, with a noted attention to dialogue and staging in storytelling.
Uoto’s significance in the industry was recognized with inclusion in the Forbes Japan 30 Under 30 list for entertainment and sports in 2024. The role of judge for the inaugural Spirits Newcomer King Championship in 2021 also reflects the creator’s established standing within the manga publishing community.
