Description
Buncololi is a Japanese author best known as the creator of the light novel series Sasaki and Peeps, which was adapted into an anime television series that began airing in 2024. The author originally began posting stories as a web novelist, starting with fan fiction in the early 2000s before moving on to original works. Buncololi first gained attention by winning the 3rd Internet Novel Award for a story that would become the debut work, Tanaka ~Age Equals Single Years of Experience as a Wizard~, which was published in print in 2015.
Following this success, Buncololi continued to develop stories through online platforms. The light novel series Nishino: The Lowest Rank in the School Caste and the Strongest Boy in the World of Supernatural Powers began as a web novel before being published by Media Factory under their MF Bunko J imprint starting in 2018. A manga adaptation of this series was serialized in Monthly Comic Alive from 2019 to 2020.
The author achieved broader recognition with Sasaki and Peeps, which originally began serialization as a web novel on the Kakuyomu and Shōsetsuka ni Narō websites in December 2018. The series won a Special Award in the Isekai Fantasy category at the 4th Kakuyomu Web Novel Contest before being published in print by Media Factory's MF Bunko J imprint starting in January 2021, with illustrations by Kantoku. The series received significant acclaim when it ranked first in the tankobon and novels category of the 2022 edition of Kono Light Novel ga Sugoi! guidebook. The story follows a middle-aged salaryman who purchases a bird at a pet shop, only to discover it is the reincarnation of a great sage from another world, leading to adventures that span both modern Japan and a fantasy realm.
A manga adaptation of Sasaki and Peeps, illustrated by Pureji Osho, began serialization in Kadokawa Shoten's Shōnen Ace Plus online magazine in January 2021. An anime television series adaptation produced by Silver Link aired from January to March 2024, with a second season subsequently announced. The series is noted for blending multiple genres, combining isekai fantasy with psychic battles, magical girl elements, and workplace comedy.
Buncololi has cited an interest in depicting protagonists who differ from conventional handsome or cool heroes. In an interview about Nishino, the author expressed a desire to create a main character who appears genuinely ordinary to be more relatable to readers, contrasting his low social standing at school with his reputation as a skilled agent in the supernatural world. This approach to character development appears throughout the author's works, with Sasaki similarly portrayed as a middle-aged corporate employee rather than a young, idealized hero.
