Nozomu Mochitsuki

Description
Nozomu Mochitsuki is a Japanese author born in 1982, primarily known for creating the light novel and manga series Tearmoon Empire. He is a graduate of the novels department at AMUSEMENT MEDIA Comprehensive Academy.

Mochitsuki began his professional writing career in 2008 with the light novel series Elementary Star Princess, published under Shueisha's Super Dash Bunko imprint. Over the following decade, he authored several other light novel series, including Royal Little Star, Aru Asa, Hero no Imouto ga Dekimashite, Chō Senkō Gakuen Derfarta, and Ore no Ibukuro wa Kanojo ni Nigirareteiru. His work during this period was consistently published by major light novel labels, establishing him as a working writer in the genre fiction space.

Mochitsuki achieved his most significant success with Tearmoon Empire, a story that follows Princess Mia, the selfish ruler of a fallen empire who is executed by guillotine only to wake up as her twelve-year-old self, armed with memories of her future and a diary that may help her change the course of history. The series began as a web novel on the user-generated content platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō in August 2018. It was subsequently acquired by TO Books, which began publishing the series as a light novel in print in June 2019 with illustrations by the artist Gilse. The series has continued with multiple volumes released over the following years.

The Tearmoon Empire franchise expanded into other media under Mochitsuki's authorship. A manga adaptation illustrated by Mizu Morino began serialization on the Comic Corona website in August 2019. An anime television series adaptation produced by the studio Silver Link aired from October to December 2023. In all adaptations, Mochitsuki is credited as the original creator and author of the source material.

The recurring themes in Mochitsuki's signature work center on second chances, personal transformation, and the comedic gap between a protagonist's self-serving intentions and the heroic outcomes they produce. Princess Mia is not a traditionally noble heroine but a lazy, selfish coward whose primary motivation is self-preservation; her attempts to avoid the guillotine inadvertently reform an empire and improve countless lives. This approach to the reincarnation and time reversal genre subverts expectations by placing an unworthy protagonist in a position where their selfish actions generate genuine good, creating both humor and narrative tension.

Within the light novel and anime industry, Mochitsuki represents a successful example of the web novel to professional publication pathway, a common trajectory for contemporary Japanese authors. His work Tearmoon Empire has achieved a complete adaptation chain from web novel to light novel to manga to anime, indicating sustained commercial viability and audience interest. The series is published in English by J-Novel Club under its J-Novel Heart imprint, extending its reach to international audiences.
