Hatsuharu

Description
Hatsuharu is a Japanese manga artist and writer known primarily for creating the romantic comedy series A Girl & Her Guard Dog. The creator’s professional career began before this work, with earlier titles including Can I Kiss You Every Day?, Kimi ga inakya Dame tte Itte, and Suki ni naranai yo, Senpai, which date back to at least 2013.

Hatsuharu achieved significant recognition with A Girl & Her Guard Dog, which has been serialized in Kodansha's Bessatsu Friend, a monthly shōjo manga magazine, since December 13, 2018. The series centers on Isaku Senagaki, the granddaughter of a yakuza boss, who tries to live a normal high school life while being watched over by Keiya Utō, a young yakuza subordinate. As of September 2023, nine collected tankōbon volumes have been released. The manga went on a brief hiatus in March 2023 due to the creator’s health.

The work has been adapted into multiple formats. An anime television series produced by Project No.9 aired from September to December 2023, spanning 13 episodes. A live-action film adaptation is scheduled for release in March 2025. The series is also published in English digitally by Kodansha USA.

Hatsuharu’s artistic identity is tied to the shōjo genre, with narratives often exploring romantic relationships complicated by social circumstances or power dynamics. The creator’s work is characterized by serialized storytelling in dedicated monthly magazines, with A Girl & Her Guard Dog serving as a primary example of a commercially successful property that has expanded into anime and live-action media.
