Atsuo Saitō
Description
Atsuo Saitō is the original creator behind the anime works Air Bound and The Adventures of Gamba. He was born on June 20, 1940. His career as an original creator is most notably defined by the Gamba series, which began with his 1972 novel Boukenshatachi: Ganba to 15-hiki no Nakama (The Adventurers: Gamba and His Fifteen Companions). This novel served as the foundation for multiple anime adaptations spanning four decades.
The first and most celebrated of these adaptations is the 1975 television anime series Gamba no Bouken (The Adventures of Gamba). Produced by Tokyo Movie, the 26-episode series was directed by Osamu Dezaki and is recognized for marking the first time a work of original Japanese children’s literature, rather than a manga, was adapted into an anime. The story follows a group of mice on a heroic adventure to protect the inhabitants of an island from a villainous weasel, a narrative centered on themes of friendship, courage, and camaraderie that recur throughout the various adaptations of Saitō’s work.
The world of Saitō’s creation was revisited in several subsequent film adaptations. These include the 1984 compilation movie Boukenshatachi: Gamba to 7-biki no Nakama, the 1991 film Gamba to Kawauso no Bouken, and most recently, a 2015 3D CG animated film. This 2015 film, titled Gamba: Gamba to Nakama-tachi in Japan, was later released in English-speaking markets under the title Air Bound. Across these productions, Atsuo Saitō is consistently credited with the original work, establishing a singular and long-lasting creative legacy within Japanese animation centered on a single, expansive narrative.
