Masahiro Anbe
Description
Masahiro Anbe is a Japanese manga artist born on May 4, 1983, in Kanagawa Prefecture. He is best known as the creator of the popular manga series Squid Girl, which was adapted into two seasons of an anime television series. His career as a professional manga artist began in August 2004 when he made his debut with the one-shot Love Tips, published in a special edition of Weekly Shonen Champion. Before his debut, Anbe worked as an assistant to established manga artists Keiichi Yagisawa and Jun Sadogawa. In 2006, he won the Encouragement Award at the 66th Weekly Shonen Champion Newcomer Manga Award for his submission Feather Possession.
Anbe's breakthrough work, Squid Girl, began serialization in Weekly Shonen Champion in 2007. The series follows a young squid girl who rises from the sea to invade humanity as punishment for polluting the ocean, only to end up working at a beachside restaurant. The manga was initially planned as a short-term series but gained enough popularity to become a full-length serialization. Its success led to an anime adaptation in 2010, with a second season airing in 2011. The Squid Girl manga concluded in 2016, spanning a total of 22 collected volumes.
Following the completion of Squid Girl, Anbe launched a new series titled Atsumare Fushigi Kenkyu-bu, also known as Gather Mystery Research Club, in Weekly Shonen Champion in September 2016. This series ran for approximately eight years, concluding in 2024. In 2025, he began serializing a new manga titled Akuma de Fukei in Weekly Young Magazine.
Anbe is known for creating unique, character-driven comedies with a distinctive round and clean art style. Early in his career, while judges praised his professional-level drawing skills, some criticized the narrative structure of his work. Anbe himself has noted that his storytelling tends to focus heavily on buildup with relatively brief conclusions. Despite these observations, his ability to craft memorable characters has earned him a dedicated following.
A notable personal detail is that Anbe suffers from severe allergies to several types of seafood, including squid, the central subject of his most famous work. He has stated that eating squid causes his lips to swell and makes him feel ill, and that his doctor warned him that eating crab could be fatal. He is also allergic to shrimp, octopus, and shellfish. Regarding his relationship with the ocean, he has commented that he prefers looking at it to going in it.
