Dakota Fanning

Description
Dakota Fanning is an American actress who has contributed voice work to a limited number of anime and anime-inspired productions. Her career began as a child actress in 1999, and she gained widespread recognition for her live-action roles in films such as I Am Sam and War of the Worlds. Within the context of anime voice acting, her most notable role is providing the English voice for the character Satsuki Kusakabe.

Fanning voiced Satsuki Kusakabe, the elder sister in the 1988 Studio Ghibli film My Neighbor Totoro. This English-language dub was produced by Disney and released in 2004. Satsuki is a young, responsible girl who, along with her younger sister Mei, discovers the magical forest spirits near their new countryside home while their mother is ill. Fanning's younger sister, Elle Fanning, voiced the character of Mei Kusakabe in the same English dub, marking a notable family collaboration on the project.

In addition to her work on the classic Studio Ghibli film, Fanning has also taken a voice role in a modern, Western-produced anime-style series. She voices the character Miranda Worth in the Rooster Teeth animated series gen:Lock, which began in 2019. Miranda Worth is described as an expert mech pilot in a series set during a global war. This role represents a foray into a different style of anime-influenced animation.

Beyond these two projects, Fanning's other voice acting credits are primarily for Western animated productions. Her filmography includes providing the voice for the title character in the animated film Coraline, Lilo in the direct-to-video Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch, and Delf in the film Yellowbird. She also voiced young Wonder Woman in an episode of Justice League Unlimited. While her overall body of voice work is established, her direct involvement in productions originating from Japanese anime is primarily defined by her performance in My Neighbor Totoro and her participation in the anime-inspired series gen:Lock.
