Miko Yasu

Description
Miko Yasu is the creator of the manga series Police in a Pod, which was adapted into an anime television series. Before becoming a manga artist, Yasu served as a police officer in Japan for approximately ten years. Her career in law enforcement directly informs the content and perspective of her creative work.

Yasu made her debut as a manga artist in 2017. Her first published work was a one-page manga titled Koban Joshi, which appeared in Kodansha's Morning magazine. The positive response to this short piece led to the launch of her first serialized work, Police in a Pod, which began publication in the same magazine in November 2017. The series is also known by its Japanese title, Hakozume: Kōban Joshi no Gyakushū. Yasu has stated that her primary motivation for creating the manga was not simply to have people read her work, but to inform the public about the realities of police work. She has mentioned that she did not grow up reading manga and that she left her police career to practice drawing and pursue manga creation.

Police in a Pod has seen significant success and multiple adaptations. In 2021, the manga received a live-action television drama adaptation. In January 2022, an anime adaptation produced by the studio Madhouse began airing. The series has also garnered critical acclaim within the manga industry, winning the 66th Shogakukan Manga Award in the general category and the 46th Kodansha Manga Award in the general category.

After completing the first part of Police in a Pod in June 2022, Yasu began a new manga series. Titled Dan Dōn, the series started serialization in Morning magazine in June 2023. The subject of this new work centers on Kawaji Toshiyoshi, a historical figure known as the father of modern Japanese police systems.

A recurring theme in Yasu's work, particularly evident in Police in a Pod, is the realistic and detailed depiction of daily life within a police station, drawn from her own experiences. The series is noted for providing a female perspective on the profession, addressing challenges such as the difficulty of using restroom facilities while on duty. Yasu has also shared personal anecdotes as the basis for scenes in her manga, including a moment where a rookie officer learns from a criminal, which she stated was taken from her own life. Her stated goal as a creator is to use the medium of manga to convey accurate information about police work to the public, a mission she developed after witnessing the dangers of overwork in the profession and the difficulty of police recruitment. Beyond her professional work, it has been documented that her husband passed away suddenly in 2022, leaving her with two children. She was a member of her school's kendo club and, despite not being a regular reader of manga, has cited works such as Attack on Titan and Saint Young Men as titles she has read. She has also noted that she used Saint Young Men as a reference when learning to draw manga.
