Shigemichi Sugita is a Japanese director, screenwriter, and film producer known primarily for his work in live-action television and cinema, as well as for his contribution to the animated feature film Giovanni's Island. Born in Toyohashi, Aichi Prefecture, in 1943, Sugita graduated from the Faculty of Letters at Keio University in 1967 before beginning his career at Fuji Television, where he debuted as a director in 1970.

Sugita is most widely recognized for creating and directing the acclaimed Japanese television drama series Kita no Kuni kara, known in English as From the Northern Lands. The series, which began in 1981 and continued for over two decades through numerous specials, became a significant cultural phenomenon in Japan, with its audience share peaking at 38.4 percent. His other notable directing credits in television include the drama Shonen H (A Boy Called H), adapted from the award-winning novel by Kappa Senoo. In film, he directed Yushun - Oracion (1988), Last Song (1994), and the Japan Academy Prize-winning feature Saigo no Chushingura (The Last Ronin, 2010).

Sugita entered the world of animation as the original story creator and co-screenwriter for the 2014 historical drama Giovanni's Island. The film, a hand-drawn production by Studio Production I.G, was directed by Mizuho Nishikubo and co-written with Yoshiki Sakurai. Giovanni's Island is set on the island of Shikotan in the aftermath of World War II and depicts the friendship between Japanese and Russian children amidst the division of their communities. The story was inspired by true events. For his work on the film, Sugita received credit as the original story creator, marking a significant expansion of his creative portfolio into animation. The film was well-received internationally, earning a Jury's Distinction award at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2014.

Throughout his career, Sugita has demonstrated a consistent focus on humanistic stories often set against significant historical backdrops, a theme evident in both his long-running television drama about life in Hokkaido and his animated work about post-war displacement. Beyond his creative roles, Sugita has also served as chairman of the All Nippon Producers Association and as President and CEO of Nihon Eiga Satellite Broadcasting Corporation, underscoring his significant standing within the Japanese entertainment industry. His transition to anime with Giovanni's Island brought his reputation for grounded, character-driven storytelling to a new medium and a global audience.
