Rui Tamati
Description
Rui Tamati is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator, primarily known for creating the four-panel comedy manga series Gokicha. The name is also romanized as Rui Tamachi. Tamati first developed the concept of Gokicha as a self-published doujin work, with the first volume released at Comiket 77 in December 2009 and a second volume following at Comiket 78 in August 2010. The series began official serialization in Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara Carat magazine starting with the September 2011 issue, released on July 28, 2011. The manga, which follows an anthropomorphized cockroach girl named Gokicha who wishes to befriend humans, ran for five tankoubon volumes published between July 2012 and August 2016. An original net animation adaptation titled Gokicha!! Cockroach Girls was produced by Movic and began streaming on Nico Nico Douga on September 14, 2012. Beyond this series, Tamati contributed ending illustrations for the tenth episode of the anime Hidamari Sketch × Honeycomb. Tamati's artistic identity is defined by a focus on moe-style character designs applied to an unconventional subject, as Gokicha takes a creature typically regarded as a pest and reimagines it as a small, kind-hearted protagonist seeking acceptance. The work blends slice-of-life comedy with a central theme of overcoming prejudice, as the character constantly endures being sprayed with insecticide, chased by cats, or washed away in her earnest efforts to connect with humans. As a creator operating within Houbunsha's Manga Time Kirara line of magazines, Tamati occupies a space known for cute-girls-doing-cute-things four-panel manga, but Gokicha stands out for its unusual premise, helping it gain a degree of recognition as a cult title that successfully transitioned from independent doujin circles to mainstream serialization and animated adaptation.
