Bas Keijzer
Description
Bas Keijzer is a Dutch actor and voice actor, born in Schoonhoven on March 31, 1973. He graduated from the acting program at the Hogeschool voor de kunsten in Amsterdam in 1999. While he has built a diverse career in Dutch film, television, and theater, he is widely recognized by audiences for his extensive work in dubbing international productions, particularly the Pokémon anime series.
Keijzer's most prominent and enduring role in anime is providing the Dutch voice for the iconic Pokémon Meowth, specifically the talking Meowth of Team Rocket. He took over the role from voice actor Jan Nonhof starting from the eighth season of the animated series. His tenure as Meowth covered a significant period, spanning several seasons and numerous films. His credits for the character include the television series Pokémon Advance (from season eight onward), Pokémon: Black and White, Pokémon: Black and White: Rival Destinies, and Pocket Monsters: Diamond & Pearl. He also voiced Meowth in a long list of Pokémon movies, such as Pokémon: The Rise of Darkrai, Pokémon Zoroark: Master of Illusions, Pokémon: Arceus and the Jewel of Life, and Pokémon Ranger and the Temple of the Sea. He continued in this role until the fifteenth season, after which he was replaced by Fred Meijer.
In addition to voicing Meowth, Bas Keijzer also took on the role of another character from the Pokémon world: Giovanni, the boss of Team Rocket. He voiced Giovanni during seasons six and seven, as well as during his time as the voice of Meowth.
Beyond the Pokémon franchise, Keijzer has lent his voice to other anime and animated projects. One of his earlier roles in anime was Gansley in the Dutch version of Yu-Gi-Oh!. His voice work also extends to feature-length animated films; for example, he voiced the character Luiz in the Dutch-dubbed versions of the films Rio and Rio 2.
Alongside his voice acting career, Bas Keijzer is an accomplished live-action actor. He has played roles in numerous Dutch television series, including appearances in Baantjer, Keyzer & De Boer Advocaten, Grijpstra & De Gier, and a main role in the series Aaf from 2013 to 2015. He has also appeared in films such as Alles is Liefde, De Storm, and Nova Zembla. His performance in the 2012 film Black Out earned him a nomination for a Gouden Kalf (Golden Calf), the most prestigious award in Dutch film.
