Shirow Miwa
Description
Shirow Miwa is a Japanese manga artist and illustrator born on November 9, 1978, in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. He made his debut in 1999 with the short series Black Mind, created in collaboration with Darai Kusanagi, which was serialized in the magazine Ultra Jump. His first solo manga series, Dogs, was serialized from 2000 to 2001. The story continued in a sequel titled Dogs: Bullets & Carnage, which began serialization in 2005, establishing the signature work for which he is best known. This sequel was adapted into a four-episode original video animation series produced by David Production in 2009.
Beyond his original manga, Miwa has worked extensively as a character designer for anime and video games. He served as the character designer for the anime series Joker Game and Kiznaiver, both released in 2016. In the video game industry, he has been the artist and character designer for the 7th Dragon series, including 7th Dragon 2020, its sequel, and 7th Dragon III Code: VFD. He also provided character designs for the game Soul Hackers 2. Other notable contributions include character designs for the mobile game Fate/Grand Order, the online game Touken Ranbu, and the manga adaptation of the American animated series RWBY, published from 2015 to 2017. Miwa is also an official member of the creative unit supercell, for which he works as an illustrator and designer.
Miwa's artistic identity is characterized by a distinctive and stylish drawing style, often described as slim and precise, utilizing very thin pen lines. His work shows a strong influence from American comic artists, including Mike Mignola, known for Hellboy, and Frank Miller. His art frequently employs a noir-style contrast created with ink and hatching rather than relying heavily on screen tones. His body of work demonstrates a significant impact as a creator of character-driven narratives and a designer whose visual identity has shaped several major game and anime franchises.
