Okina Kamino
Description
Okina Kamino is a Japanese creator known primarily as the author of original light novels that have been adapted into manga and anime. Born on January 7, 1970, in Okinawa Prefecture, Kamino began their writing career after winning an honorable mention in the 1999 Famitsu Entame Taisho awards for a work titled Kagami no Uta. Their professional debut came later that same year with the light novel Yamiro no Sentenshi, published by Famitsu Bunko. Kamino is a self-described gun enthusiast, anime fan, and admirer of classic tokusatsu films, interests that frequently inform the themes and settings of their work.
Kamino is best known as the original creator of the light novel series Asobi ni Iku Yo!, which was released in English as Cat Planet Cuties. The series began publication on October 25, 2003, under Media Factory's MF Bunko J imprint, with illustrations by Eizo Hoden and later by Nishieda. The main story concluded after 20 volumes, with the final volume released on February 25, 2015. The series blends science fiction, action, and romantic comedy, centering on a high school student in Okinawa who encounters a cat-eared alien. The property was expanded into a manga adaptation illustrated by 888, which was serialized in Monthly Comic Alive from 2006 to 2014. A 12-episode anime television series adaptation produced by AIC+ aired from July to September 2010, followed by an original video animation episode in 2011. For these adaptations, Kamino is consistently credited as the original creator.
Beyond Cat Planet Cuties, Kamino has an extensive bibliography of light novel series spanning multiple publishers. Other notable works include Six Bolts, published by Dengeki Bunko in 2001; Oni Hime Zanma Kō, published by Kadokawa Haruki Bunko; Nangoku Sentai Shureo, published by Sonorama Bunko; and Gunshi Sagishi wa Kamihitoe, published by Shueisha's Dash X Bunko in 2017. Kamino's writing is characterized by a blend of action, speculative fiction elements, and humor, often featuring weaponry and military motifs alongside fantastical or science-fiction premises. Kamino has also contributed short fiction to anthologies outside their primary series, including a story titled May 27, 1945 for the Japanese edition of the Lovecraftian anthology Nights of the Living Dead.
Kamino's significance in the industry lies in their role as a foundational creator in the light novel medium, with Cat Planet Cuties standing as a representative work of the late 2000s to early 2010s era. The series achieved a level of multimedia success that was a benchmark for the genre, transitioning from a long-running light novel into both a manga and an internationally licensed anime adaptation. Kamino maintains a personal website and is active on social media under the handle @OKina001.
