Jess Winfield
Description
Jess Winfield is an American voice actor, writer, and producer, widely recognized for his long-standing association with the Lilo & Stitch franchise, particularly as the voice of the character Dr. Jumba Jookiba in multiple anime and animated series. Born Jesse Morris Borgeson on March 8, 1961, he began his career in theater as a founding member of the Reduced Shakespeare Company, where he co-created and performed in the long-running comedy The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged). This production became an international hit and was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Comedy.
Winfield's career in animation began in the 1990s as a television writer for numerous series, including Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, Biker Mice from Mars, and Disney's 101 Dalmatians: The Series. He became heavily involved with the Lilo & Stitch franchise, first as a writer for the direct-to-video films Stitch! The Movie and Leroy & Stitch, and later as an executive producer on the subsequent Lilo & Stitch: The Series.
His most significant voice acting role emerged from this deep involvement with the franchise. He is the English dubbing voice of Dr. Jumba Jookiba in the Japanese anime series Stitch! and its follow-ups, Stitch!: Zutto Saikō no Tomodachi and Stitch!: Itazura Alien no Daibōken. He continued to voice the character in the Chinese-American co-production Stitch & Ai, which aired in 2018. He assumed the role from the original actor, David Ogden Stiers, and became the primary English voice for the character in these later international productions.
Beyond voice acting, Winfield's career is marked by his work as a writer and producer across several animated television series. He served as a writer for the Daytime Emmy Award-winning series Teacher's Pet and wrote for shows such as The Penguins of Madagascar and Mickey Mouse Works. His versatility extends to writing for both children's animation and adult audiences, and he is also a published novelist and self-help author.
