Ajiko Kojima
Description
Ajiko Kojima is a Japanese manga artist and writer recognized as the original creator behind the Tonari no 801-chan series. Kojima first launched Tonari no 801-chan in April 2006 as a four-panel webcomic published on a personal blog. The series follows the relationship between a male otaku named Tibet and his girlfriend Yaoi, a fujoshi whose enthusiasm for romantic male pairings manifests as a small, green, furry creature. The work draws its central visual motif from an actual shopping district mascot in Kyoto, which Kojima adapted after the character became an online phenomenon. Ohzora Publishing released the first compiled volume in December 2006, and the series continued through eleven volumes until its conclusion in 2016.
The commercial success of the original webcomic led to multiple adaptations across different media. A live-action film produced exclusively for DVD was released in September 2007, featuring Kojima in a brief cameo appearance. An anime adaptation was initially announced with Kyoto Animation attached to produce, scheduled to air in 2009, but the project was unexpectedly canceled. However, an original video animation titled Tonari no 801-chan R was produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Yutaka Yamamoto, bundled with the fourth volume of the manga released in September 2009. Kojima is also credited as the original creator for Alice in Deadly School The Animation, an OVA released in 2021.
Beyond the main series, Kojima's work has generated related manga publications. A shōjo reinterpretation titled Tonari no 801-chan: Fujoshiteki Koukou Seikatsu, written and illustrated by Jin, was serialized in Kodansha's Bessatsu Friend magazine from November 2007 to April 2009. Kojima also worked on Tonari no 801-chan Plus as both writer and artist in 2012. Additional published works include the manga series Fudosan Sharona no Bōken, which was serialized in Bunch Kai magazine. Kojima remains active as a creator, with ongoing social media presence and continued manga publication. The creator's body of work centers on otaku culture, fujoshi perspectives, and slice-of-life romantic comedy, establishing Kojima as a significant voice in internet-originated manga that achieved mainstream commercial and multimedia success.
