Hasso Zorn
Description
Hasso Zorn was a German actor and voice actor, born on June 28, 1931, in Frankfurt an der Oder, who built a prolific career spanning several decades until his death in Berlin on February 4, 2016. He completed his acting education at the Berliner Theaterschule before gaining experience on stage in cities such as Stendal, Görlitz, Magdeburg, and his hometown. His work in front of the camera included appearances in several German television productions from the late 1960s through the 1970s. However, his most extensive and enduring professional impact came from his work as a voice actor, a field he entered in the mid-1960s. He became widely recognized as the German dubbing voice for numerous prominent international actors, including Eli Wallach, David Kelly, and Philip Baker Hall.
While Zorn was renowned for dubbing these live-action stars, his voice also became familiar to audiences of German-language versions of anime. His contributions to this genre were significant and varied. In the film Yona Yona Penguin, he voiced the character Parakeke. He was a frequent presence in the Ghost in the Shell franchise, providing the voice of the character Daisuke Aramaki in the 2004 and 2005 dubs of the original movie, as well as in the television series Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex and its second season, 2nd GIG. His other anime roles included the policeman in Grave of the Fireflies, the old man in Paranoia Agent, Mr. Furuichi in Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, Gakai in Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit, Yawh in Utawarerumono, the Elder Kai in Dragon Ball GT, and roles in series such as (Le) Chevalier D'Eon, E's Otherwise, Mermaid Forest, and Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE. He also lent his voice to characters in films like Origin ~Spirits of the Past~ and Coo: Tōi Umi kara Kita Coo. Beyond anime, his voice acting extended to other animated works, such as taking over the role of Blaubarschbube in the German dub of the television series SpongeBob Schwammkopf from the sixth season onward.
In addition to his on-screen and voice acting, Zorn was active in the realm of audio dramas, with a career in radio and Hörspiele that stretched from the early 1970s to 2015, including roles in productions like the Gruselkabinett series. He also worked as a dialogue director for at least one dubbing project, the 1998 film Der (wirklich) allerletzte Streich der Olsenbande. His work in the industry continued up until the year before his death, demonstrating a long and active career dedicated to his craft.
