Kanata Konami

Description
Kanata Konami is a Japanese manga artist recognized as the creator of the popular cat-themed series Chi's Sweet Home. Born on July 3, 1958, in Nagano Prefecture, Japan, she made her professional debut as a manga artist in 1982 with the serialized comic Petit Cat Jam-Jam (also known as Buchi Neko Jamu Jamu), which was published in Kodansha's shoujo manga magazine Nakayoshi. Her body of work is noted for its appeal to a broad range of ages, and she has authored more than a dozen comic series, many of which focus on the daily lives of cats and pets.

Konami is best known for creating Chi's Sweet Home, which was serialized in Kodansha's Morning magazine, a publication aimed at adult readers, from 2004 to June 2015. The series was compiled into twelve volumes in Japan. The original manga has been translated and published in English by Vertical Inc., which also released the series in a three-in-one omnibus edition. Beyond Chi's Sweet Home, she is also the author of FukuFuku: Kitten Tales, another series about a kitten that has been published in English.

The success of Chi's Sweet Home led to multiple anime adaptations. The original manga inspired two 2D television anime series which aired in 2008 and 2009, with the second season sometimes titled Chi's New Address. The property was later adapted into a 3DCG anime series titled Chi's Sweet Adventure, whose first season premiered in Japan in October 2016, followed by a second season in April 2018. In 2024, a new season of the 3DCG anime, titled Chi's Sweet Summer Vacation (Koneko no Chi Ponponra Natsuyasumi), was announced and released worldwide on streaming services starting July 19, 2024. This new season follows the kitten Chi and her family on a trip to Okinawa. Konami also created the manga Chi's Sweet Adventures, a full-color series of kitty tales inspired by the anime, published in English by Vertical Comics.

Her artistic identity is closely tied to a gentle, observational style of storytelling. Konami is described as having a keen sense of cat ecology, and her ability to observe and render feline behavior with accuracy is a hallmark of her work that has earned her respect within the pet-manga community. Her stories are consistently accessible, often created for readers of all ages, which distinguishes her as an artist whose work is both broadly appealing and critically regarded for its quality.
