Paila Pavese was an esteemed Italian actress and voice actress, whose career spanned over six decades across theatre, film, television, and dubbing. Born in Rome on September 23, 1942, she was born into a family of artists; her father was actor Nino Pavese and her grandfather was the noted voice actor Luigi Pavese. She graduated from the National Academy of Dramatic Arts and made her stage debut at the age of eighteen, performing alongside actors such as Gabriele Ferzetti. In 1970, she was a founding member of the Gruppo della Rocca theatre cooperative in San Gimignano. Her stage career included performances with Vittorio Gassman, Gigi Proietti, and Maurizio Micheli, appearing in productions like Otello and La presidentessa.
While her stage work was significant, Pavese became widely recognized for her extensive voice dubbing career. She lent her voice to numerous international stars in their Italian-language versions. Among her most iconic roles were providing the voice of Jessica Rabbit in Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and dubbing Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams in the first two live-action Addams Family films. She also dubbed Kim Basinger in Batman, as well as actresses in films such as Fame, Psycho III, and Yes Man.
Her work in animation and anime included voicing the title character in the Italian dubbing of the animated film Anastasia and characters in the Stuart Little animated series. In the anime series Reporter Blues, a 1991 Italian-Japanese co-production, Pavese provided the Italian voice for the character Madame Lapen.
Beyond performing, Pavese also worked as a dubbing director and adapter. She directed the Italian dubbing for the television series Dharma & Greg and for the film The Triumph of Love. Over her career, she received recognition for her work, including the Voci nell'ombra award for her dubbing in the film A Private Affair and a award for best female voice at the Sanremo dubbing festival for her work in Irina Palm. Paila Pavese passed away on February 22, 2024, at her home in Rome at the age of 81.
