Yatsuki Wakatsu

Description
Yatsuki Wakatsu is the original creator behind The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter, a multimedia franchise that began as a web novel and has since expanded into a light novel series, a manga adaptation, and an announced anime project. The series, originally titled Isekai no Sata wa Shachiku Shidai, first appeared on the user-generated novel platform Shōsetsuka ni Narō, where it was serialized from March to December 2018. It was subsequently acquired by Enterbrain, which began publishing it as a light novel on February 28, 2019, with illustrations provided by artist Kikka Ohashi. As of late 2024, three volumes of the light novel have been released in Japan, with English-language editions published by Yen Press.

The story was further expanded through a manga adaptation illustrated by Kazuki Irodori, which began serialization in Enterbrain’s B’s Log Comic digital magazine on March 26, 2020. Six compiled tankōbon volumes of the manga have been released as of November 2024, and it is also published in English by Yen Press. In November 2024, it was announced that the series would receive an anime adaptation, marking the franchise's expansion into animation.

Yatsuki Wakatsu’s creative identity is closely tied to this single, highly specific series, which blends genres in a distinctive manner. The work is classified as an isekai, or another world, story but diverges from typical narratives by centering on a protagonist who is not a heroic adventurer but a corporate accountant. The series is also notable for its inclusion of Boys Love, or BL, elements, with a central relationship forming between the protagonist, Seiichirou Kondou, and a knight captain named Aresh. Sources describe the creator as specializing in BL, NL, and GL genres. This combination of workplace-themed isekai and romance defines the artistic identity of the work.

In terms of industry significance, The Other World's Books Depend on the Bean Counter represents a successful trajectory from user-generated web fiction to a professionally published property with a substantial transmedia presence. By November 2024, the series had achieved significant commercial success, with over 1.4 million copies of its light novels and manga in circulation. The progression from web novel to light novel, followed by manga and then an anime adaptation, illustrates a common but significant path to success within the contemporary Japanese publishing and media industry.
