Atsushi Suzumi
Description
Atsushi Suzumi is a Japanese manga artist born in Ehime Prefecture. Her birth date is April 24, 1978. She has been drawing manga since kindergarten and cites Akira Toriyama and Mutsumi Inomata as major influences on her work. Suzumi began her professional career in 2005 with the release of Haridama Magical Cram School, a single-volume series that was published by Kodansha. That same year, she launched her most famous original work, Venus Versus Virus. This manga was first serialized in MediaWorks' shonen magazine Dengeki Comic Gao! and later continued in Dengeki Daioh, ultimately spanning eight collected volumes. Venus Versus Virus was adapted into a twelve-episode anime television series produced by Studio Hibari, which aired in Japan from January to March 2007. The manga has been licensed for English release in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment.
Following the success of Venus Versus Virus, Suzumi continued to create original manga. In 2007, she published Amefurashi: The Rain Goddess. In 2009, she launched the two-volume series Nightmare Go Round, described as a dreamy action comedy. Her other original works include Yoru Naku Suzume, Bloody Little Circus, and Uruwashi Kaito Alice, also known as Beautiful Phantom Thief Alice. In addition to her own creations, Suzumi has worked as a manga illustrator for light novel series. She adapted Kohei Azano's Tokyo Ravens into a manga serialized in Shonen Ace that ran for fifteen volumes. She also adapted the light novel Record of Lodoss War: The Crown of the Covenant into a three-volume manga serialized in Monthly Shonen Ace between 2019 and 2021.
Suzumi's artistic identity is characterized by action-driven narratives that frequently blend elements of supernatural fantasy, science fiction, and comedy. Her work on Venus Versus Virus, which features female protagonists battling supernatural beings, has been noted for containing yuri themes. She is known to use traditional G pens and maru pens for her ink illustrations while completing color work digitally using software like Painter. As an industry figure, Suzumi has been recognized internationally, having been a guest at North American anime conventions including Sakura-Con and the Pacific Media Expo in 2011, where she conducted panels and autograph sessions. She maintains an active presence as a creator, having worked consistently on both original serializations and major adaptations since her debut in the mid-2000s.
