The original story is written by Ennki Hakari, with character designs by KeG, and follows a gamer who is transported into the body of his skeletal avatar in a fantasy world. The manga adaptation has been published in multiple tankōbon volumes by Overlap, and the series has been licensed in North America by Seven Seas Entertainment. An anime television series adaptation of the story aired in 2022. Prior to this major work, Sawano also contributed an endcard illustration for the ninth episode of the 2016 anime series Innocent Angels.

Sawano’s body of work primarily consists of original manga series created in the late 2000s and early 2010s, many of which explore themes of familial and romantic relationships. Their later, most prominent work, Skeleton Knight in Another World, represents a shift to illustrating a large-scale fantasy adventure adaptation. As the artist behind this popular isekai manga, Sawano has contributed to a significant multimedia franchise that includes light novels, an anime series, and international publishing. Sawano is also known to be a member of the doujin circle Tarots.
