Aoi Teshima
Description
Aoi Teshima is a Japanese singer and voice actress born on June 21, 1987, in Kasuga, Fukuoka, Japan. Her career is notably intertwined with Studio Ghibli, beginning with her discovery by director Gorō Miyazaki after a performance in South Korea in 2005. Her demo of the song "The Rose" reportedly impressed Studio Ghibli producer Toshio Suzuki, leading to her involvement in her first major project.
Teshima made her professional debut in 2006 by providing the voice for the character Therru in the Gorō Miyazaki-directed film Tales from Earthsea. This role was a dual debut, as she also performed the film's theme song and insert song, "Therru's Song". Her collaboration with Gorō Miyazaki continued in 2011 when she voiced the character Yuko in his second feature film, From Up on Poppy Hill. As with her first role, she also performed the main theme, "Summer of Goodbye," and other songs for the film.
While her voice acting roles are most prominently linked to these two Studio Ghibli films, her primary career is as a singer, with a discography that includes several original and cover albums. Her vocal work extends beyond film to video games, as she sang two songs, "Light" and "Warmth of the Moon," for the Nintendo Wii game Fragile Dreams: Farewell Ruins of the Moon. Her achievements as a singer include her debut single, "Therru's Song," reaching number five on the Oricon charts and achieving gold certification for cellphone downloads. In 2016, her single "Letter to Tomorrow" topped the Billboard Japan Hot 100 chart. For her contributions to the arts, she was presented with the Citizens Cultural Award of her hometown, Kasuga City, in 2012.
