Keiichi Arawi
Description
Keiichi Arawi is a Japanese manga artist born on December 29, 1977, in Gunma Prefecture. He made his professional debut in early 2006 with the manga Kazemachi, which was published in Monthly Comic Flapper. Later that same year, he launched his most famous work, Nichijou, in Kadokawa Shoten's Monthly Shōnen Ace magazine. The series, whose title translates to "Everyday Life," became a significant success. In 2011, it ranked among the top fifty best-selling manga series in Japan, and in 2015, it placed sixth in the manga category of the Sugoi Japan Awards. The manga's initial run concluded in December 2015, but after a six-year hiatus, Nichijou resumed serialization in 2021.
Following the completion of Nichijou's first run, Arawi began a new series titled City in September 2016, published in Kodansha's Morning magazine. City concluded its initial serialization in February 2021, but the manga returned in December 2024. In 2019, the series was recognized by critic Rob McMonigal as the best continuing series for grown-ups at San Diego Comic-Con.
Arawi's creative output includes several other works. He serialized Helvetica Standard, a freeform, full-color anthology of comic art and design work, in Newtype magazine. This series offers a humorous look at modern design and serves as a deconstruction of the world of Nichijou, also including diary-like snippets from his life as a working artist. He also launched Heaven in Newtype in 2013 and began the manga Amemiya-san in Monthly Shōnen Sunday in 2021.
The adaptation history of his work is closely tied to Kyoto Animation. The studio produced a twenty-six episode anime television series of Nichijou, also known as Nichijou - My Ordinary Life, which aired from April to September 2011, preceded by an original video animation released in March of that year. More recently, an anime adaptation of City, titled CITY THE ANIMATION, is scheduled to premiere in July 2025. This production is notable for being Kyoto Animation's first non-sequel anime in six years. The anime is directed by Taichi Ishidate and features music by Piranhans.
Beyond his print manga, Arawi has also created original animated shorts which he began posting on his YouTube channel in 2020, for which he performs all the voice acting. Before becoming a manga artist, he worked as a typesetter, a background that has informed his precise and design-oriented aesthetic. His artistic identity is defined by absurdist and surreal comedy, focusing on the mundane yet strange moments of everyday life. His work typically features ensemble casts and alternates between ordinary situations and outlandish, random events, often blending heartwarming character interactions with a highly distinctive visual sense of humor.
