Rodger Parsons
Description
Rodger Parsons is an American voice actor and writer, widely recognized for his long-standing role as the narrator in the English-language dub of the Pokémon anime. He began his voice acting career in 1971 and is known in New York voice-over circles for his versatility. Early in his career, he was credited under the pseudonym Ken Gates. Parsons is a graduate of New York University, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Television, Motion Pictures, and Radio.
Parsons' most prominent and enduring role is the narrator for the Pokémon franchise. He was one of the original voice actors on the series, providing the narration from the very first episode. His narration is featured in the first six seasons of the anime, which includes the original series, Pokémon: Advanced, and Pokémon: Advanced Challenge. Following a transition in the show's dubbing production, Parsons briefly left the role. However, he returned to the series starting with the ninth season, Pokémon: Battle Frontier, and continued as the narrator through subsequent series, including Pokémon: Black and White, Pokémon XY, Pokémon Sun & Moon, Pokémon Journeys: The Series, and Aim To Be A Pokémon Master. This makes him one of the few voice actors to have returned to the series after the change in dubbing studios. Beyond the television series, Parsons has also provided the narration for the vast majority of Pokémon films, from the first movie, Pokémon: The First Movie, through to releases like Pokémon: Zoroark: Master of Illusions and Pokémon The Movie: Secrets of the Jungle.
In addition to his work on Pokémon, Parsons has a diverse portfolio of voice acting credits. He has narrated numerous documentaries for outlets such as The History Channel and NET, covering topics including Native Americans in the Civil War, the history of Nazism, and profiles of historical figures like Nelson Mandela. He has also contributed his voice to several video games. Notably, he voiced the character Cid of the Lufaine in Dissidia Final Fantasy and Dissidia 012 Final Fantasy. His other video game credits include the narrator in Pokémon Battle Revolution, the voice of the Pirate in I Spy Treasure Hunt, and the Voice of Darkness in Bullet Witch. Parsons has also appeared in minor roles in feature films such as New York and Betrayed, and has done extensive work in radio and television commercials.
Beyond performing, Parsons is also a writer, providing both rewrites and original scripts. He is active in teaching voice-over technique and maintains a home studio that allows him to record and deliver his work remotely.
