Emily Hirst
Description
Emily Hirst is a Canadian actress known for providing the English voice for the main character in the acclaimed anime film The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, on July 9, 1993, she began her acting career as a child performer, with an early role in the television series Smallville in 2001. Her career has primarily consisted of live-action roles in television and film productions, with her voice work in anime being a notable but less frequent part of her filmography.
Hirst's most significant contribution to anime is her role as Makoto Konno in the 2006 English-language version of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. The film, originally a Japanese production by Madhouse and directed by Mamoru Hosoda, was dubbed into English by Ocean Productions and released by Bandai Entertainment. In this coming-of-age story, she voiced the protagonist, a high school girl who gains the ability to travel through time. This performance earned her the Young Artist Award in 2009 for Best Young Voiceover Talent.
Aside from this prominent role, her other credits are almost entirely in live-action. She appeared in the television series Blade: The Series and had a recurring role in the later seasons of Smallville. Her film work includes parts in Desolation Sound and the television movie For the Love of a Child, the latter of which earned her a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a TV Movie or Miniseries. She has also appeared in films such as X2: X-Men United and the TV movie Battlestar Galactica: Razor.
Due to her work on various Vancouver-based productions, Hirst has frequently collaborated with a consistent group of Canadian actors. Her co-stars on projects like Smallville, The Twilight Zone, and Storm Seekers include Terry Chen, Steve Bacic, and Mackenzie Gray. On The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, she worked alongside fellow voice actors Andrew Francis, Alex Zahara, and Shannon Chan-Kent, who voiced other key characters in the English dub.
