Mio Wakagi
Description
Mio Wakagi is a Japanese writer and original creator, primarily known for the fantasy novel series High School Aurabuster. Wakagi was born on December 2, 1968, in Saitama Prefecture, Japan. The original family name in Japanese is written as 若木 and the given name as 未生.
Wakagi is most notably the author of the long-running light novel series High School Aurabuster. The novel series began in 1989 and concluded in 2021, spanning a period of over thirty years. The series gained significant popularity in the 1990s, which led to multiple adaptations. The story revolves around Ryosuke Sakiya, a high school student with powerful psychic abilities who becomes involved in an ancient conflict between supernatural forces known as the Kuu no mono and the You no mono. The original novels feature illustrations by the artist Yun Kouga.
In 1999, Wakagi's work was adapted into a three-episode original animated video (OAV) titled High School Aurabuster, also known as High School Aurabuster: Hikari no Mezame. For this production, Wakagi is credited as the original creator. The anime was produced by the animation studio OLM and directed by Hajime Kamegaki. The OAV presents an original story that incorporates the early narrative elements from the novel series.
Beyond the anime, the High School Aurabuster universe expanded into manga. Makoto Mori, a manga artist who frequently collaborated with Wakagi, created several manga adaptations based on the novels in the 1990s, including works such as High School Aurabuster Ten Commandments in 1993 and High School Aurabuster Seirain no Madonna in 1995. Decades later, a new manga adaptation titled High School Aura Buster Engage began serialization in 2024. This Reiwa-era comic is illustrated by Yuuna Sasaki and is based on Wakagi's original novels.
