Ernst Meincke
Description
Ernst Meincke is a German actor and voice artist, born on January 5, 1942, in Feldsberg. He completed his acting education at the Academy for Film and Television in Potsdam-Babelsberg between 1962 and 1965. Even as a student, he began receiving roles in film and television productions and started working as a voice actor for dubbing, radio plays, and documentaries. Early in his career, he was a permanent ensemble member at the Kleist-Theater in Frankfurt an der Oder from 1969 to 1972, after which he continued as a freelance actor and speaker.
While Meincke is primarily renowned for his extensive work dubbing live-action films and series, his portfolio includes voice work for animated and anime productions. Among his notable roles in this field are the character Großer Weiser in the anime series Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit and Herr Gerchin in Shōnen Keniya. Other animation credits include roles in the 2007 animated film Der kleine König Macius - Der Film and the series that inspired it, Little King Macius, as well as voicing the character Winters in the 2007 animated film Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. He also provided the German voice for the character Bunmei Muroto in the anime film Jin-Roh.
Meincke's career as a voice actor is exceptionally prolific, with several hundred credited speaking roles. A significant portion of his early work involved lending his voice to over 1,000 synchronizations for DEFA, the state-owned film studio of the former German Democratic Republic, where he dubbed actors such as Gregory Peck, Timothy Dalton, Jean-Louis Trintignant, and Franco Nero. Following German reunification, he remained highly active. He is perhaps best known as one of the primary German dubbing voices for actor Patrick Stewart, most famously taking over the role of Captain Jean-Luc Picard in the series Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1992. He has also been the regular German voice for numerous other prominent actors, including Kenneth Welsh, Bob Gunton, Geoffrey Rush, Carmen Argenziano, Terry O'Quinn, James Brolin, and, since 2005, Bollywood star Amitabh Bachchan. His voice can also be heard in radio play productions, such as the series Gabriel Burns, and he has worked as a station voice for the radio news program hr-info.
