Ikuko Sugita
Description
Ikuko Sugita was a Japanese voice actor born on May 1, 1931. Her career in the performing arts began in 1950 with her involvement in theater groups such as Gekidan Shichiyōkai, and she later joined the Tokyo Actor's Consumer's Cooperative Society in 1961.
Sugita's voice acting work spanned several decades, with notable roles in anime series from the 1960s through the early 2000s. One of her earliest roles was as Dalton夫人 (Mrs. Dalton) in the 1965 anime series Space Patrol Hopper. She is also recognized for her performance as Ulla Räikkölä in the 1984 World Masterpiece Theater anime series Katri, Girl of the Meadows.
In the late 1990s, she voiced the character Koumi'ishi Sensei, an elderly doctor, in the 1998 anime Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. She also provided the narration for the 1999 anime series Buba Chacha.
Sugita is perhaps best known to some audiences for her role as Mikami Kuramitsu, the headmaster of the Galaxy Police Academy, in the Tenchi Muyo! franchise. She first voiced this character in the 2002 anime spin-off Tenchi Muyo! GXP. Her association with the series highlighted her ability to portray authoritative figures.
Beyond her anime roles, Sugita's career also included voice work in foreign film and drama dubs. Notably, she provided the Japanese voice for the title character in the 1951 film Anna Karenina and for Vi Moore in the 1984 film Footloose. She was also the voice of Carol Post in the drama Mr. Ed.
Ikuko Sugita passed away in 2009. Consequently, for the fourth season of the Tenchi Muyo! Ryo Ohki OVA series, which was released after her death, her role as Mikami Kuramitsu was taken over by Yōko Soumi. Her professional profile also noted her possession of specialized skills in traditional Japanese performing arts, including Shin'na (a style of Jōruri chanting), kabuki-style dialogue, and kodan-style narration.
