Shōzō Hayashiya

Hayashiya Shōzō is a Japanese voice actor and performing artist, officially recognized as the ninth generation to hold the name Hayashiya Shōzō in the traditional comic storytelling art of rakugo. Born Yasutaka Ebina on December 1, 1962, in Tokyo, he began his career under the stage name Hayashiya Kobuhei before succeeding to his current name. In addition to his work in entertainment, he also serves as an associate professor of humanities at Josai International University.

As a voice actor, Hayashiya has contributed to a range of anime films and television series. He voiced the character Tapu, the overweight goat who acts as an older brother figure to the protagonist Mei, in the 2005 animated film adaptation of the popular children's book series Arashi no Yoru ni. His filmography also includes a prominent role in the Studio Ghibli film Pom Poko, where he provided the voice for the tanuki Ponkichi. Other anime credits include the role of Yōichi Terai in KochiKame: Tokyo Beat Cops, Kichijō Kairakutei in Oishinbo, Takashi Ariyama in Hiatari Ryōkō!, and the narrator for the anthology Ton Ton Atta to: Niigata no Mukashibanashi. He also voiced the character Wire in the 1998 television series Super Doll Licca-chan.

Hayashiya has a notable history with the long-running baseball anime Touch, where he voiced the character Kōtarō Matsudaira across the original television series and several of its subsequent animated films. He is also part of the cast for the long-running children's anime Soreike! Anpanman, voicing the character Hayashi Riceman. In addition to his voice work, Hayashiya is a familiar face on Japanese television, appearing in numerous television dramas, variety shows, and commercials, as well as in live-action films such as Tokyo Family and the What a Wonderful Family! series.
