Yoshinori Kitase

Description
Yoshinori Kitase is a Japanese video game director, producer, and scenario writer whose work has had a significant influence on the role-playing game genre, particularly through his long tenure at Square Enix. Born on September 23, 1966, Kitase developed an early passion for filmmaking, inspired by his father’s love of cinema and a formative experience watching Star Wars at the age of 12. He went on to study film and screenwriting at the Nihon University College of Art, a background that would later define his approach to interactive storytelling.

Kitase began his career in the animation industry before joining Square in 1990. His initial work involved game design and scenario writing for titles such as Final Fantasy Adventure and Romancing SaGa. His early success in crafting compelling narratives led to a long creative partnership with Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi. Kitase quickly rose to prominence as a director and scenario writer during what is often considered the golden age of the Final Fantasy series, directing critically acclaimed entries including Final Fantasy VI, Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VIII, and Final Fantasy X. He also served as co-director on the celebrated title Chrono Trigger. After the departure of Sakaguchi, Kitase transitioned into a producer role, overseeing later entries in the series such as Final Fantasy XIII and its sequels, as well as serving as producer for the Final Fantasy VII Remake project.

Kitase’s significance as an original creator extends beyond video games into anime and manga adaptations, primarily as the source material creator. His role in these adaptations is rooted in his foundational work on the original game titles. He is credited as an original creator for several manga series based on the Kingdom Hearts franchise, which incorporates characters and settings from the Final Fantasy series. Specifically, he holds this credit for the manga adaptation of Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories. He is also credited as an original creator for the Kingdom Hearts manga and Kingdom Hearts II manga due to his role in creating the Final Fantasy characters featured in those stories, such as Cloud Strife, Aerith Gainsborough, and Squall Leonhart. His influence in anime is similarly tied to his game work; he served as executive producer for the original animation video Last Order: Final Fantasy VII and as a producer for the film Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children.

Throughout his career, Kitase has been defined by his filmic approach to game design, emphasizing cinematic cutscenes, complex character psychology, and narrative ambition. He has cited his goal as creating works with the scale and emotional impact of cinema. His artistic identity is marked by a willingness to blend genres, moving the Final Fantasy series from a medieval fantasy setting to science fiction and modern aesthetics, and by his focus on the internal struggles of his characters. In his roles as a director and producer, he frequently collaborated with writer Kazushige Nojima and character designer Tetsuya Nomura.

Kitase holds a prominent position within the Japanese game industry. As of 2024, he is a Corporate Executive and the Head of Creative Business Unit I at Square Enix, overseeing major development teams. He also serves as the Brand Manager for the Final Fantasy series, a role in which he helps guide the franchise’s overall direction and quality. He has been instrumental in mentoring the next generation of creators at the company, ensuring the continuation of the series he helped define.
