Hiroyuki Kitazume

Description
Hiroyuki Kitazume was born on July 24, 1961, in Tokyo, Japan. He is an animator, manga artist, and illustrator whose career began in the early 1980s after graduating from Tokyo Design College in 1982. His early professional work included joining the animation studio BeVore, where he contributed to productions such as Aura Battler Dunbine. In 1984, he co-founded the studio Pack with other animators before establishing his own studio, Atelier Giga, in 1987.

Kitazume gained significant recognition for his work with Sunrise, the prominent anime studio. He rose to prominence as a character designer and animation director on several major entries in the Gundam franchise. His work on Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam (1985) as an animation director brought him early fame, and he subsequently served as the character designer for Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ (1986) and the feature film Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Counterattack (1988).

As an original creator, Kitazume is credited for the 1987 original video animation Relic Armor Legaciam. For this project, he served as the original creator, director, and character designer. The single-episode OVA, produced by his studio Atelier Giga, is a science fiction story set on the planet Libertia, where a young woman named Alcia pilots a special armored suit called Legaciam to protect her grandfather and confront a military guild. The production of Relic Armor Legaciam is noted to have faced commercial difficulties, which contributed to the dissolution of Atelier Giga shortly thereafter.

Beyond Legaciam, Kitazume contributed original concepts and character designs to several other OVA series, including Genesis Survivor Gaiarth (1992) and Moldiver (1993), on which he also served as director. His work in the 1980s and 1990s included character design for projects such as Megazone 23 and Robot Carnival, for which he directed the Starlight Angel segment.

Kitazume has also maintained an extensive career as a manga artist. He is the author of Mobile Suit Gundam: Char's Deleted Affair - Portrait of a Young Comet, a manga series that ran from 2001 to 2009 focusing on the character Char Aznable. More recently, he began a new manga adaptation of Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam titled Mobile Suit Z Gundam Define. Following the financial challenges associated with Relic Armor Legaciam, he joined Anime International Company (AIC) before later returning to freelance work, frequently collaborating again with Sunrise. His career is defined by his significant contributions to the mecha genre and his longstanding involvement with the visual development of the Gundam franchise.
