Toshio Azami
Description
Toshio Azami, also known by the kanji name 生明 俊雄, is a Japanese former animation planner, producer, and academic who is credited as the original creator for the 1993 anime OVA Time Bokan: Royal Revival. Born in 1940 in Chiba Prefecture, Azami graduated from the School of Political Science and Economics at Waseda University. He then pursued graduate studies, taking master's and PhD courses at the Graduate School of Humanities and Sociology at the University of Tokyo. Professionally, he worked for Victor Entertainment, also known as Victor Ongaku Kangyou, where he served as director of the western music department, director of the video production department, director of Victor Studio, and director of the media network department. After his time in the music and video industries, he became a lecturer at several institutions, including the Tokyo Institute of Technology, the University of Toyama, Kanda University of International Studies, and Kansai University. He later became a professor in the Department of Media Business at Hiroshima University of Economics, retiring in 2011. He has authored books and academic papers on the history, structure, and functioning of the Japanese music industry.
Within the anime industry, Azami worked primarily as an executive producer, producer, or planner on numerous original video animations from the late 1980s through the mid-1990s. His production credits include Gunbuster, Kaze o Nuke!, Goddamn, Ryokunohara Labyrinth, Nineteen 19, Oz, Dragon Half, Fortune Quest, and Please Save My Earth. He also served as chief producer for the theatrical film The Weathering Continent and as planning staff for Megazone 23 Part III. His most notable creative credit is as the original creator for Time Bokan: Royal Revival, a two-episode OVA released between November 1993 and January 1994. This work is a revival of the original Time Bokan television series that first aired in 1975, though Azami was not involved with the original series. His role as original creator specifically applies to this OVA production, distinguishing his contribution from the earlier Tatsunoko Productions franchise created by Tatsuo Yoshida and Ippei Kuri. Beyond his production and creative work, Azami has contributed to anime as a writer and lecturer, and his career reflects a bridge between the music industry, academic research, and anime production during the OVA boom of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
