Kai Ikada

Description
Kai Ikada is a Japanese manga artist known for creating the romantic comedy series Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable!. Born in Kitami City on the northern island of Hokkaido, Ikada has expressed a lifelong interest in drawing and a vague but persistent aspiration to become a manga creator since childhood. He has also worked professionally under the name Umi Masuda.

Ikada's professional career began in 2016 when he won the first NEXT CHAMPION Rookie of the Year award for his one-shot manga Fall Out, created under his pen name Umi Masuda. That same year, he produced the short serialization Psycho Load for Weekly Shonen Champion. From 2017 to 2018, he serialized the fantasy series Great Old: Dragon no Tsukuri-kata in the same magazine, which was later collected into three volumes.

His most significant breakthrough came with Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! The series originated from a one-shot titled Instant Gal Menko-chan, which Ikada created in just five days to represent his home prefecture in the 2018 Jump Scout Caravan Cup, where it won the Hokkaido representative award. Following a second one-shot published in January 2019, the series was greenlit for serialization due to its popularity and began running on Shueisha's Shonen Jump+ digital platform on September 4, 2019. The manga concluded its run in September 2024 after five years of publication. The series follows Tsubasa Shiki, a teenager from Tokyo who moves to rural Hokkaido and becomes involved with a lively local gal named Minami Fuyuki.

The success of Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! led to an anime television adaptation produced by studios Silver Link and Blade, which aired from January to March 2024. The series was directed by Misuzu Hoshino with Mirai Minato serving as chief director. Beyond his major serialized work, Ikada has produced other one-shots, including Kanojo wa Mizumizushii and a TikTok collaboration campaign manga titled Shujinko e no Michinori @Izumi Hikari, illustrated by Takeshi Sakurai.

A defining characteristic of Ikada's artistic identity is his strong connection to Hokkaido, which serves as the primary setting for his most famous work. The very title Hokkaido Gals Are Super Adorable! incorporates Hokkaido dialect, with namara meaning very or super and menkoi meaning cute or adorable. This regional authenticity extends to the characters' speech patterns and the depiction of Hokkaido's winter landscapes and local culture. Ikada has noted that working on the digital Shonen Jump+ platform offers greater creative freedom compared to traditional printed magazines, allowing for flexibility in serialization frequency, page count, and expression. He has stated that his future goal as an artist is to publish one hundred comics in his lifetime.
