Sarah Strange
Description
Sarah Strange is a Canadian actress born on September 6, 1974, in Vancouver, British Columbia. She is recognized for her extensive work in television and film, and is particularly noted within the anime community for her voice acting in the English adaptation of the classic series Ranma ½. Strange grew up surrounded by the entertainment industry, as she is the daughter of screenwriters Susan Lynn and Marc Strange, who were the creators of the long-running Canadian series The Beachcombers.
Strange's most prominent and defining role in anime is providing the English voice for the male half of the titular character, Ranma Saotome. She voiced the character for the first three seasons of the Ranma ½ television series, which encompassed the first 64 episodes, as well as for the associated Original Animated Videos and the feature films. This included the movie Team Ranma vs. The Legendary Phoenix, the third film in the series. Her portrayal of the loud, proud, and perpetually frustrated young martial artist became a signature part of the anime's initial English-language release. After her departure from the role to focus on live-action work, she was succeeded by Richard Ian Cox.
Beyond her iconic work on Ranma ½, Strange contributed her voice to other animated projects. She provided the voice for Franklin in the animated series Dino Babies and voiced the character Rookie in Littlest Pet Shop. These roles, however, form a smaller part of a career overwhelmingly focused on live-action performances.
Throughout her career, Strange has built an extensive filmography in Canadian and American television. She is well known for her role as Helen in the acclaimed Canadian drama Da Vinci's Inquest and as lead virologist Jill Langston in the science fiction series ReGenesis. Her television credits also include recurring or guest roles in popular series such as The X-Files, Stargate SG-1 and its follow-up film Stargate: The Ark of Truth, Men in Trees, The Killing, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and Snowpiercer. In the 2010s, she became a familiar face in the Garage Sale Mysteries series of made-for-television movies on the Hallmark channel.
For her work as a live-action actress, Strange has received critical recognition. She has garnered multiple Gemini Award nominations, which are among the highest television honors in Canada, and won an award for her guest role in the series Neon Rider when she was 21 years old. While her voice work in anime is a cherished part of her career for many fans, it represents a focused period of her broader work as a Canadian actress.
