He is credited as the original creator of the manga Ninjaman Ippei, which was adapted into a thirteen-episode anime television series that aired from October 4, 1982, to December 27, 1982.

The anime adaptation of Ninjaman Ippei is a mix of ninja themes and school comedy, following Ippei and his fourth-grade classmates in Tokio village as they navigate life with their unusual superpowers while training to be ninjas. The series was directed by Hideo Takayashiki, with character design by Junzaburo Takahata. The original manga on which the series is based was specifically created for a children's audience.

Kawai is also credited as the author of a manga adaptation of Jules Verne's classic novel Two Years' Vacation, titled Juugo Shounen Hyouryuuki. This manga was published as a single complete volume.
