Horumarin

Description
Horumarin is a Japanese manga artist, character designer, and the original creator behind the Medabots (Medarot) franchise. Known professionally by the pen name Horumarin, their birth name is Yuuichi Takayanagi, and they are a native of Ota, Gunma, Japan, with a birthday of March 1.

Horumarin first began developing the Medabots concept around the age of 21, starting with the core idea of a robot built from interchangeable parts. This concept evolved into the original Medarot role-playing game, released for the Game Boy in 1997, for which Horumarin served as the character designer. The franchise centers on a world where customizable, artificially intelligent robots called Medabots are a common part of everyday life, battling in organized tournaments known as Robattles.

Alongside the game's release, Horumarin began a manga series based on the property. This manga was serialized in Kodansha's Comic BomBom magazine, running from July 1999 to June 2000. Horumarin continued to write and illustrate subsequent manga adaptations for the franchise, including those based on Medarot 2, 3, 4, 5, and Medarot G. The manga was later compiled into collected volumes and received an English-language release in North America by Viz Media under the title Medabots.

The Medabots franchise expanded into a popular anime television series. The first series, Medarot, began airing in Japan in July 1999. Horumarin is credited as the original creator for this series. Following its conclusion, a sequel anime titled Medarot Damashii (known as Medabots Spirits in some regions) was produced, airing from July 2000 to March 2001. Horumarin is also credited as the original creator for this second series, which continued the story of the main protagonist, Ikki, and his Medabot partner, Metabee.

Horumarin's artistic identity for Medabots was shaped by a desire for realism and relatability. In an interview, they explained the intention to set the story in a world where robots are common, like a convenience store item, rather than on a distant battlefield. This perspective led to the decision to make the Medabots approximately one meter tall, a size that felt like a younger brother or a pet and could realistically exist within a child's home. Their design philosophy emphasized creating recognizable silhouettes and incorporating familiar details like screws and plastic tanks to make the robots seem like tangible artifacts that children could understand and imitate.

Horumarin's work on the Medabots franchise represents their most significant contribution to the anime and manga industry. As the original creator, they were foundational in establishing a multimedia property that spanned video games, long-running manga serializations, and two distinct anime television adaptations produced by notable studios such as Bee Train and Production I.G. The franchise saw international success, with the anime broadcast in numerous countries and the games and manga released in North America and other regions, establishing Horumarin as the creative force behind a globally recognized property.
