John Needham

Description
John Needham is a British television writer, editor, and producer whose career includes significant work as an original creator in the field of anime. His background in the industry began in the 1970s as a film editor at the BBC's Ealing Film Studios, working primarily for the Drama and Music & Arts departments. He later became a producer in the Music and Arts department and served as the Deputy Series Producer on the BAFTA award-winning arts series Omnibus for three years. His production work earned critical acclaim, including the prestigious Italia Prize for Music for his film on Ballet Rambert's Cruel Garden.

Needham’s connection to animation and original genre creation was further established through his collaboration with the five-time Oscar-winning animation director Chuck Jones, with whom he produced several films on the history of animation for networks such as the BBC, Warner Bros., and Turner Broadcasting. He later became the Controller of Programmes at Mentorn Films, a prominent UK independent production company. Following this, he entered a professional partnership with Gerry Anderson, the creator of Thunderbirds. Together, they developed various projects, one of which was FireStorm, a 26-part science fiction anime series produced in Tokyo for Japanese television. Beyond this work in animation, his career has encompassed a range of roles in television production and development through his own company, Peculiar Pictures.
