Orlando Prado

Description
Orlando Prado was a Brazilian voice actor, recognized for his extensive work dubbing anime and live-action series and films for the Brazilian Portuguese market. He was born Orlando Amaro Prado on March 22, 1927, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Before entering the world of dubbing, Prado built a career in radio, working at prominent stations such as Rádio Ministério da Educação, Rádio Globo, and Rádio Nacional do Rio de Janeiro starting in the 1940s. This background in radio drama provided him with strong interpretive skills and vocal control, which became the foundation for his success in voice acting.

Prado began his dubbing career around 1957, a time when the industry in Brazil was still in its early stages. Over four decades, he lent his voice to a vast array of characters across numerous dubbing studios, including Herbert Richers, TV Cinesom, CineCastro, and Tecnisom, among others. His versatility allowed him to portray a wide spectrum of roles, from princes and charismatic heroes to complex villains and comedic figures in animated series.

In the realm of anime, Orlando Prado contributed to several titles that were broadcast in Brazil. He is notably credited as the voice of Pick in the series Yusei Kamen and as Osamu Noguchi in the series Kick no Oni. His other anime and animated dubbing work included roles in productions such as Groizer X, where he voiced Jayce, and Star Blazers: The Comet Empire as Sandor. He also participated in the older dubbing of Speed Racer and provided voices for characters in Don Dracula and the film Arcadia of My Youth. Beyond Japanese animation, his voice was heard in numerous international cartoons and animated series, including the roles of Ryker Kilbane in The Adventures of the Galaxy Rangers, the Duke of Buckingham in Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds, and various characters in US productions like Silverhawks and The Transformers.

While prolific in animation, Prado was equally, if not more, renowned for his dubbing of live-action actors. He was the official Portuguese voice for several major Hollywood stars, including Clint Eastwood, Elvis Presley, Omar Sharif, and Marcello Mastroianni. However, his most iconic and memorable role was as J.R. Ewing, played by Larry Hagman in the television series Dallas. This performance became his signature work, earning widespread acclaim from both audiences and colleagues. He also provided fixed voices for actors in other popular series, such as Robert Urich in Vega$ and S.W.A.T., and Joe Penny in Tempo Quente.

Colleagues remembered Orlando Prado as an exceptionally talented and versatile actor, capable of great emotional depth and vocal transformation. He was also described as a generous and supportive figure within the dubbing community, often advocating for his fellow actors. His career was interrupted in December 1990 when he suffered a stroke that affected his diction. Although he attempted to return to work, he was unable to perform at his previous level. Orlando Prado passed away in November 1999 in Rio de Janeiro at the age of 72. He left behind a legacy as one of the foundational and most respected voices in the history of Brazilian dubbing.
