Ted Lehmann

Description
Ted Lehmann, born Theodore Lehmann on July 26, 1922, in Hutchinson, Kansas, was an American actor whose career encompassed both live-action and voice work. He passed away on February 11, 2018, in Los Angeles, California. Lehmann is primarily recognized in the field of animation for his extensive contributions to English-language dubs of Japanese and other international animated series and films during the 1980s.

Lehmann's voice acting career is closely associated with several prominent dubbing studios of the era, including Harmony Gold, Saban, and MGM. He often performed under alternative names, with credits listing him as Leonard Pike and Ted Layman in addition to his birth name. This practice was common among voice actors who worked on multiple dubs for different producers.

Among his notable roles in anime, Lehmann provided voices in several adaptations of popular Japanese series. He voiced General Bleak, known as Admiral Valsey in some versions, and a staff officer in the English dub of the 1978 film Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato. For Harmony Gold, he was heard as Mr. Pig in the Dr. Slump TV series and as Whiskers the Wonder Cat, the character Karin, in the dub of Dragon Ball Movie 3: Mystical Adventure. He also voiced the character Sol in the Harmony Gold dub of the film Lensman.

Lehmann's work extended to other animated projects dubbed into English. He is credited as the Narrator for the first 22 episodes of the Spanish-Japanese animated series Around the World With Willy Fog. He also served as the Narrator for several segments of the Saban dub of the original video animation series My Favorite Fairy Tales, including the stories of The Three Little Pigs and Snow White. In the MGM dub of the film Aladdin and the Wonderful Lamp, he voiced the Sultan.

Under the alias Ted Layman, Lehmann's voice can be heard in other English-dubbed anime of the period. These roles include Dr. Zero as a second voice in Space Pirate Captain Harlock, An-D2 and Clarence in GoShogun, High Dingy Doo in Fushigi na Koala Blinky, and the Mayor in Maple Town Stories. He also served as the Narrator for both Grimm's Fairy Tales and New Grimm's Fairy Tales under this name.

In addition to his voice work in animation, Theodore Lehmann had a career as a character actor in live-action film and television spanning from the late 1950s through the late 1980s. His on-screen credits include guest appearances on series such as Johnny Ringo, The Donna Reed Show, Matlock, and Falcon Crest, as well as roles in films like The Andromeda Strain and Under the Rainbow.
