Lucie Dolene
Description
Lucie Dolene was a French actress and singer, born Lucienne Chiaroni on June 17, 1931, in Damascus, Syria, who became one of the most recognizable voices in French dubbing, particularly for animation. Before becoming a voice actor, she established a career in operetta and musical comedy, performing with artists such as Luis Mariano and Les Frères Jacques. Her clear soprano voice led to her being discovered for dubbing work in the 1950s, initially providing singing voices for films like Singin' in the Rain.
Dolene's voice acting career in anime and animated series was extensive. She is known for her work in the French-language versions of several classic Japanese anime series. Her roles included Médusa, the mother of Orié, and the goddess Youriana in Pygmalio. In Idol Densetsu Eriko, she voiced multiple characters, including Erika's mother (Mère d'Erika) as well as Marie and Alexandra. She also played Mme Récola in the series Katry, the Cow Girl, known in French as Cathy la Petite Fermière. Her other notable anime credits included providing voices for Tom in Candy Candy, multiple roles in Pollyanna including Jamie and Mrs. Bridget, and Nicole Olivier and the second voice of André's grandmother in Lady Oscar. She also contributed to Reporter Blues as Léontine and Pierrot.
Beyond her work in Japanese animation, Dolene was legendary in France for her dubbing of characters from Western animation and live-action films. Her most famous role was as the voice of Snow White in the 1962 French dub of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. She later voiced Mrs. Potts (Mme Samovar) in the first French dub of Beauty and the Beast. Her filmography also included the voice of the young girl Shanti in the first French version of The Jungle Book, the Empress Marie in Anastasia, and Zorrino in Tintin and the Temple of the Sun.
A significant achievement in her career was her successful lawsuit against the Walt Disney Company in 1993. She sued Disney for rights and residuals related to the use of her voice for the home video release of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Her victory was an emblematic case for voice actors' rights, though it resulted in Disney recasting her roles in subsequent versions of their films. This event was later documented in a short film titled Blanche-Neige Lucie. Lucie Dolene passed away on April 9, 2020, at the age of 88.
