Lothar Grützner

Description
Lothar Grützner was a German actor and voice actor, born on November 20, 1926, in Dresden, Germany. He is primarily known for his extensive work in German dubbing, where he lent his deep, sonorous voice to numerous characters in international films and television series for the German-speaking market. His career in voice acting spanned several decades and was based in Hamburg, where he resided for much of his professional life. He passed away on January 31, 2018, in Hamburg.

In the context of anime, Grützner's most documented credit is his participation in the German dubbed version of the 1980 anime film Phoenix 2772 - Space Firebird (original title: Hi no Tori 2772: Ai no CosmoZone). In this film, he provided the German voice for the character Bun. A German synchronization database from 1982 lists him as voicing the character Boan, who is credited as being voiced by Shuichiro Moriyama in the original Japanese version. Given the similarity in names and the single credit, Bun and Boan are very likely the same character in this production.

Beyond this role, evidence of Grützner's involvement in anime is sparse. He is also credited with voicing the character Herr Belutti in the German dubbed version of another anime film, A Christmas Adventure (Mori no Tonto-tachi), from 1984. These two anime dubbing roles appear to be isolated instances within a much larger body of work focused on Western animation and live-action series.

Grützner's primary legacy in voice acting lies in his prolific dubbing of non-animated and Western animated productions. He was renowned for his baritone voice and was a highly active "Synchronsprecher" (dubbing actor). His most notable roles include voicing Commissioner Gordon in the German dub of the 1960s Batman television series, Stan Zbornak (played by Herb Edelman) in The Golden Girls, and various Disney characters such as Goofy, Colonel Hathi in The Jungle Book, and Mr. Smee in Peter Pan. He was also a familiar voice on the German children's television program Sesamstrasse, dubbing characters like Mr. Johnson and Simon Soundman. In addition to on-screen dubbing, Grützner was a prolific voice in German radio plays, most notably with recurring roles in the popular detective series Die drei??? (The Three Investigators) from the late 1970s into the 2000s.
