Fujio Tokita was a Japanese actor and voice actor born in Nagano Prefecture on January 30, 1937. He passed away on July 18, 2018, at the age of 81. His career began on the stage after he joined the training institute of the Mingei Theatre Company and later co-founded the Seinen Gekijo Theatre Group in 1960. He soon moved into screen acting, with early roles in television dramas and films, including appearances in Akira Kurosawa's High and Low and Red Beard.
Tokita's voice became widely recognized for his work in animation and narration. He is particularly renowned for his role as one of the two primary narrators, alongside Etsuko Ichihara, on the long-running television series Manga Nihon Mukashibanashi, which aired from 1975 to 1994 and introduced generations of viewers to Japanese folktales. In anime, he voiced Uncle Pomme in the Studio Ghibli film Castle in the Sky. His other notable voice roles include the lighthouse keeper in Night on the Galactic Railroad, the hermit of Kitayama in Murasaki Shikibu The Tale of Genji, Kukuruk in Unico in the Island of Magic, Sankichi in Zō no Inai Dōbutsuen, and Kujira in Maegami-Taro. His contributions to children's entertainment and animation were recognized with the Special Performance Award in the Voice Actor category at the 4th Japan Anime Awards and the 30th Mobil Children Culture Award. Throughout his multifaceted career, Tokita also remained active in live-action film and television, on stage, and as a narrator for commercials and other projects.
