Um Sang-Hyun is a prominent South Korean voice actor born on December 29, 1971. He began his career in voice acting by joining the Educational Broadcasting System (EBS) voice acting division in 1998. Prior to his voice acting debut, he worked in theater, performing in the 1997 South Korean musical The Last Empress and serving as an assistant director for other musicals that same year.

After his initial exclusive work with EBS, Um Sang-Hyun became a freelancer in 2001. He gained prominence in the early 2000s for his role as Kira Yamato in the Korean dub of Mobile Suit Gundam SEED. This success led to him voicing characters in numerous television animation series, including Chrono Crusade, Digimon Frontier, Fullmetal Alchemist, InuYasha, and School Rumble. A notable role that the actor is known for is voicing Hayato Shindo, known as Ricky in the Korean broadcast, for the EBS re-dubbed version of the anime Time Travel Tondekeman, also known as Time Quest.

Throughout his career, Um Sang-Hyun has been recognized for his popularity, particularly among younger audiences. In 2012, he won a Nickelodeon Korea Kids' Choice Award for Favorite Voice from an Animated Movie, an award recognizing South Korea's best voice actor, for his role as Po in the series Kung Fu Panda: Legends of Awesomeness. He is widely recognized for several major roles, including L Lawliet in the Korean dub of Death Note, Calcifer in Howl's Moving Castle, and the title character Poli in the South Korean children's series Robocar Poli. His other prominent roles include Kevin Levin in various Ben 10 series, Koji Minamoto in Digimon Frontier, Koga in InuYasha, Hikaru Hitachiin in Ouran High School Host Club, Kyon in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, and Cosmo in The Fairly OddParents. His work also extends to video games, where he voices the character Hwoarang in the Tekken series.

Despite being a freelancer for many years, Um Sang-Hyun remains one of the main voice actors representing EBS and has built a prolific career with a vast portfolio of roles in animation, narrations, and video game dubbing.
