Monty Repuyan

Description
Montreal Repuyan, often credited as Monty Repuyan, is a Filipino voice actor recognized for his extensive work in Tagalog dubs of anime television series and films, primarily for networks such as GMA Network and ABS-CBN. His career is closely associated with the era of analog dubbing in the Philippines, where voice actors often worked with limited information and resources.

Repuyan has lent his voice to a wide array of characters across numerous popular anime series. He is notably the voice of Vincent, the Tagalog name for the character Hiei, in the immensely popular Filipino dub of Yu Yu Hakusho, locally known as Ghost Fighter. His other prominent roles in the series include Younger Toguro, referred to as Taguro, and Kaname Hagiri, also known as Sniper. In the same era of dubbing, he provided the voice for Max Domon, the Tagalog name for the protagonist Domon Ishijima, in Flame of Recca. He also voiced Takenori Akagi in the GMA Network redub of the basketball anime Slam Dunk.

Beyond these iconic roles, Repuyan's filmography demonstrates his versatility. He voiced the character Raizou Mine in the Tagalog version of Kenyū Densetsu Yaiba. His work also includes the role of Mamoru Chiba in the final season of Sailor Moon Sailor Stars for TV5. He has voiced Detective Koichi Zenigata in Lupin III, as well as characters in Astroboy, such as Detective Tobashi and Lamp. His work also extended to tokusatsu, where he was the original voice actor for Chevalier in Chikyuu Sentai Fiveman and later for Emperor Tranza in Chojin Sentai Jetman. In a departure from anime, he also voiced B1 in the Filipino dub of the children's program Bananas in Pyjamas.

In addition to voice acting, Repuyan has also contributed to the dubbing process as a translator of anime from Japanese to Tagalog. He also served as the dubbing director for the Tagalog version of the anime series Gun Frontier. His credit for the English version of Great Dangaioh confirms his involvement in various dubbing projects.

Repuyan and his colleagues have publicly reflected on their work during the early days of Philippine anime dubbing, describing the challenges of working in an analog environment without internet access. They often worked from physical transcripts with no broader context for the series, leading to improvised creative decisions, such as the renaming of characters for local appeal and the famous gender confusion of characters like Kurama (Denise/Dennis) and Genkai (Master Jeremiah) in Ghost Fighter. He has expressed pride in the lasting legacy of these dubs, which remain beloved by Filipino audiences.
